Here Comes the Boom (USA, 2012)

If you want to have a good laugh and feel inspired all in one, I recommend this movie. Apparently it got 38% on Rotten Tomatoes because "it wasn't funny enough," but this is one of those cases in which I disagree with the rating.

It's a classic underdog story, but what sets it apart from others of this type is that he's not fighting the big guy for his own benefit, fame or glory. He's doing it to help someone else out. He's a very flawed character that pursues a noble goal. His and other characters' flaws provide the humor, the noble goal provides the motivational message. It can come off as corny or cheesy, but for a comedy, I think it did pretty good. Let's just say, I've seen worse.

In any case, here's a list of why I think it deserves to be seen:

1. I laughed out loud at several moments (that sometimes doesn't happen to me.)

2. Salma Hayek - If you have a celebrity crush on her, need I say more?

3. Niko - A Dutch former MMA fighter that teaches Kevin James' character what he needs to know. He's just adorable, in a manly kind of way.

4. Miguel - A middle aged man that wants to become a U.S. Citizen so bad. I could relate. Also, this might be racist, but when foreign people say or do something funny, it's just generally funnier than normal.

5. The fights - Will he win? Will he lose? How bad is he going to get beat up? It gets your adrenaline going for sure and with MMA, I feel like the moves are less predictable. This will definitely appeal to the male audience. I'd recommend it for a date movie, it'll keep both parties happy.

6. What happens at the end of the fight with the green haired man. Watch it. I can't guarantee a laugh, but I can guarantee it'll be memorable.

If and when you do watch this movie, one tip of advice is to watch it with others, particularly friends. The laughter can be infectious... especially when you have the likes of Olga Paz and Katie Scalf sitting on either side of you.

Watch. Laugh. Enjoy.
